Junior Class Publicity Officer

Initial Letter - Section One
Wow, junior year already. Just yesterday, I was opening my Chromebook and logging on to my first period English class with Mrs. Ochoa. At first, I never believed when people said that time flies fast in high school and to make the most of it, but it truly does. I have many hopes, dreams and goals for this school year because it is one of my last. One of them being to work my hardest and to do things that truly make me happy. Feeling like I have to live up to my siblings and parents expectation, this year I want to do the things that I actually want and to not be afraid to try something new. Usually, you would start FFA your freshman year; however, I decided to actually listen to my dad and am hoping to raise an animal. Everyone around me already knows what they are doing, but I try not to let that get in my way of figuring out what I truly want to do.
During Core Camp, inspiration really struck inside of me to make my life the way I want it to be. One saying that I truly live by is, “Without failure, there would be no success.” Nowadays, everyone is supposed to know what they are doing and their goals sophomore year of high school; and we are supposed to be living without mistakes. However, to truly learn and figure out what you want in life, you have to mess up and do wrong. I applaud myself for entering FFA this year, knowing less than my peers, but I am eager to learn and create connections with new people around me.
It’s scary to think that next year I will be applying to colleges, so I hope that this year will be a productive year. This is my first yearning being an officer position in leadership and the pressure is on. Although I am only a publicity officer, I have to assist and help my fellow officer teams to produce well organized and fun events. I am excited to be here though, this being my second year. I feel more connected to this class and believe that the chemistry will increase from all grade levels. Now being a "veteran," as Morty likes to say," I hope to strengthen my leadership skills, communication skills and overall confidence.

Part 1: Favorite Quote - Section 2
“The most alluring thing a woman can have is confidence.”
“We are trying to do all we can to help out gallant soldiers, sailors and airmen. And we are trying, too, to bear our own share of the danger and sadness of war. We know, every one of us, that, in the end, all will be well.” - Queen Elizabeth II If you look at what you have in life, you'll always have more. If you look at what you don't have in life, you'll never have enough. -Oprah Winfrey
These quotes stated above have been very influential in my life. They have helped me straighten my path when I have off roaded. The past few months I have tried to make sure that I am putting myself first and giving myself the time to take care of myself. In the past, I have put other people before me which harmed me in the end. Worried about how I will come across when I start to say “no” more or speak my mind, I need to break through the cycle of caring so much. These quotes also help me realize that everything will be well at the end of the day. If you give things time and put your heart and soul out there and are nice to people, the universe, or whoever is above us, will give you goodness in return.

Part II: Quote - Section 3
“Behold, my friends, the spring has come; the earth has gladly received the embraces of the sun, and we shall soon see the results of their love!” - Sitting Bull
I chose this quote because I have realized that the work I put in, for events and myself, may not always give me an initial outcome. That outcome could take months, days, or even years for me to realize the hard work and dedication I have put in. Obviously, we will see the direct impact the events we hold at RHS from the student body, but I’m talking more about than just how fast you do paperwork, but the characteristics it takes to be a good one. I have so much learning and so much more growing to do, but this year was a showstopper to say the least. Learning how to deal with controversy and different opinions is one of the major lessons I had to take on this year. At the moment, these challenges seem to be life draining and drama inducing. I thought to myself how all of this is going to make my life worse, rather than how it is going to strengthen me as a leader. We need those hard days to push us to be better, and teach us what is right and what is wrong. I specifically chose this cheery quote to remind myself that goodness will come in the end, and to share that goodness with others. A good leader is as good as his peers, so why not teach the world how to be a better person? Leaders are supposed to look out for others and want the best for them; and I have been trying to enforce this mentality everyday.

Part 1: Goals - Section 4
Leadership goals:
- I will turn in all my assignments and have no late work.
- I will be helpful to my officer team and others in this class.
- I will keep my area clean and tidy because it will help keep my mind more organized.
- I will maintain good grades.
- I will think of myself more and not let others walk all over me.
- I will do what I think will make me happy.
Part II: Goals - Section 5
Leadership goals:
- I will turn in all my assignments and have no late work.
- This goal was going pretty well the first semester, but I started to slack off a little bit during this last semester. I am not proud of not fulfilling my goal, and will not make any excuses for myself on why I wasn’t able to. People go through hard times all the time and still get their work done. I need to keep trying to apply myself harder, so I can get the grades that I want.

- I will be helpful to my officer team and others in this class.
- I believe that I have fulfilled this goal by being a support person on this team. I will make time to get things done and try to give it my all as much as I can. I believe that I have shown my team that I am there for them and will do anything to get the work done.

- Yeah… My intentions for this goal were pure, but I did not execute this at all. If you saw my room right now, you would not be pleased with me. I really need to buckle down and try to keep my room clean, but I have grown accustomed to my mess; in a way, I have discovered a cohabit with my messy room.

- I will maintain good grades.
- Maintaining good grades is all a mindset. I believe that I could have gotten better grades than I did, but I also know I put in a lot of work for these grades. I am a busy girl and do a lot of outside activities including sports, leadership, and FFA, which takes up a lot of my time and energy. However, time management is an area that I still need to work on.

- I believe that I have fulfilled this goal because I have definitely stood up for myself and what is right. This was definitely a difficult thing to do, but I am happy I put my happiness and what is right first. High school is a very difficult time because there are many selfish people only caring about themselves. To them, they think their feelings are the only one that matter, but that is just not true. This goal has reminded me that all feelings matter, even the ones that seem dramatic.

Part II: People Magazine Article - Section 7
Lucia Machado Perez is on the move! In the interview with E! Lucia states that she is going to continue her next few steps of her journey in figuring out who she is at San Diego State. Although it is not certain, many critics seem to believe that her choice is leaning towards the Aztecs! Wanting to strengthen her confidence of being an independent woman, she is proud, wanting to further her learning in business and create a life of her own. She is hoping to establish a career of her own and then establish a beautiful family with someone that truly supports her.
“High School has taught me a lot more than just what's in the textbooks. It’s taught me who I want to surround myself with, and how to figure out who I want to surround myself with!” Lucia said looking around the office with her classic big smile on her face.
Lucia continues to explain her dreams and goals and mention that she wants to have a side hustle in real estate. She has always had an explainable love for homes and wants to give others the joy of buying a house for themselves.”
“Although I am not in the situation to buy my first home, I just adore the idea of a place that can bring so much comfort and closure to someone’s day. I want to be able to share that feeling with others.”
She may not be certain how her life will play out, however, she has the motivation to make her life successful!

Role Model - Section 8
This may be very cliche but my role model has to be my mom. She is more than just a mom, she has to be one of my best friends. Throughout it all, I know I can rely on my mother to be there by my side and help me with everything I need. I can go on and on about all the things that she does for me, but that list will go on forever and ever.
The past few months have been very hard on me. I have lost trust and confidence in myself and others and have felt quite lonely. However, my mom is my biggest supporter and my rock. I can also count on her, even with her busy schedule. My mom gives me the best advice, and I hope that one day I can be just like her. Not only is she there for me, but she is also there for my whole entire family. Everyone, even people outside of my immediate family rely on her to get the job done, and she does! She always has a million things on her plate, but she gets them done and does them well. I envy her for her organization skills and I can’t wait to spend and make more memories with her. I love you Mom.

Inner Animal - Section 9
Due to the struggles of deciding on what animal truly represents me, I decided that the one thing that could truly determine it is a personality quiz. After a quick google search, I found a WWF quiz that decides on what your inner animal could be and I got a Flamingo! I am not complaining about this result because I actually agree with it. Flamingos are vibrant and shine through their social aspects in life. They are a very merry animal and I am honored to be associated with things like that. I try to spread positivity and truth wherever I go and try to find the beauty in everything. Life can be hard sometimes, but you have to look past the rough patches and seek the good. Being an exotic and tropical creature, flamingos are a very bold and even aggressive creature. With their long and skinny legs, they receive attention from others, even when not needed. I believe that I exert off energy that makes people look, either it's from my loud voice something funny I said. I am proud to be a flamingo and I will continue my journey of being like one!

"Bad Day"
(originally by Daniel Powter)
(from "Alvin And The Chipmunks: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" soundtrack)
Where is the moment we needed the most?
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost.
They tell me your blue skies fade to gray.
They tell me your passion's gone away.
And I don't need no carryin' on.
You stand in the line just to hit a new low.
You're faking a smile with the coffee to go.
You tell me your life's been way off line.
You're falling to pieces everytime.
And I don't need no carryin' on.
Because you had a bad day.
You're taking one down.
You sing a sad song just to turn it around.
You say you don't know.
You tell me don't lie.
You work at a smile and you go for a ride.
You had a bad day.
The camera don't lie.
You're coming back down and you really don't mind.
You had a bad day.
Oh, you had a bad day.
Well you need a blue sky holiday.
The point is they laugh at what you say.
And I don't need no carryin' on.
You had a bad day.
You're taking one down.
You sing a sad song just to turn it around.
You say you don't know.
You tell me don't lie.
You work at a smile and you go for a ride.
You had a bad day.
The camera don't lie.
You're coming back down and you really don't mind.
You had a bad day.
(Oh... Holiday)
Sometimes the system goes on the blink.
And the whole thing turns out wrong.
You might not make it back and you know.
That you could be well oh that strong.
I'm not wrong (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeeeah).
So where is the passion when you need it the most?
Oh you and I.
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost.
Cause you had a bad day.
You're taking one down.
You sing a sad song just to turn it around.
You say you don't know.
You tell me not to lie.
You work at a smile and you go for a ride.
You had a bad day.
You've seen what you like.
And how does it feel for one more time?
You had a bad day.
You had a bad day.
Although it may seem a little silly, I believe that it has been described for the past few months. The whole meaning of this song is to remind the audience how although you may have bad days things will, and can get better. Everyone goes through tough times or just a “bad day” , however, they are able to fake their way through it and see the light at the end of the tunnel. Yet, it is also okay to just take a day to wallow over it and hope for the best tomorrow.
Junior year, so far, has been quite a rollercoaster and I’m just really here for the ride of it. Friendships have changed, drama has erupted, and tears have been shed. But, that doesn’t mean that the whole year is going to be completely horrible. This song represents me and this point in my life because I am just trying my best to keep things moving along and doing well. We will all have our bad days, but we will continue to make this year as great as it can be!

What I love to do... - Section 16
This past year I have been expanding my hobbies and priorities in my life and it has truly made me more happy. I started doing FFA and little niche hobbies such as crocheting to broaden my range of qualities. This has opened more opportunities for me to make more friends and just open more conversations for me. As a junior, I am continuing to broaden my application for college inside and outside of the classroom. I participate in many clubs on campus, but I also like to keep myself busy with cooking, hanging out with friends and doing activities.
I have learned to stay disciplined by doing all these events in my life, and have learned, the hard way, that to get good at anything you need to keep practicing. I try and practice as much as I can, but sometimes it gets hard. With my diverse sense of hobbies, I have some that I go to as an escape from the world, and some that push me towards my goals. Hard work will pay off.

Letter to My Parents - Section 17
Dear Parents,
Thank you for all the support you have given me through these past few months. You guys have always been my biggest supporters, best friends, and the truest people I know. This year has been a hell of a ride, and I would not be as happy as I am without you guys. I am so appreciative of the relationship that we have, because I know so many people that dont tell their parents anything. I love that I can tell you guys all my problems and you guys always give me the best advice. I love that I feel like I can never be judged by you guys, and that I truly feel from the bottom of my heart that you guys are the best parents a girl can have. You inspire me to do my best throughout it all and push through the hard things harder and stronger. I am truly privileged to have you guys as my parents, and will strive to be more like you guys every single day.

General Advice - Section 18
Dear Next Junior Publicity Officer,
Wow! I can;t believe that it is already time to pass down my crown to the next person. Oh how I am going to miss this position. I am writing to you today to let you in one scoop of what this position is really about.
Starting off with the basics, you will need to know how to use canva and how to use it well. It is one thing to know how to make a plane post, but to really grab the attention of the student body, you need to add some pizazz! One way that I liked to do that is by using trendy templates instead of using blank posts. Find templates that fit the theme and make sense; nothing random or ugly looking. Also, do not be afraid to go outside of the box. Many people are tired of looking at overdone designs, and to really capture their attention, try putting cute little sayings on them too.
Something that I wish I knew before becoming this position is that you have to influence your classmates to also participate in activities that you are putting on. This sounds very obvious, but it is surprising how little people try to dress up, even in leadership. Push others in the class to dress up and that will help influence the student body too!
I believe that you will do great in this class and in this position! If you ever need any help, you know who to contact. I am rooting you and all of your achievements. Let’s make this next year great.
Sincerely,
Lucia Machado Perez

The Professional - Section 21
This year has been a very interesting year to be a part of leadership. Many new lessons have been shared, and different opportunities to better yourself. One example of this is conflict. There are many ways to deal with this, and there is truly no “real” way to do it. Everyone is different and expects different things from each other, which can be rooted from our own selfishness. A true leader is a listener. They listen to the hurt and concerns of others, and attempt to make amends. Though amends do not always mean a solution. Agreeing to disagree will be one of the most powerful lessons you will ever learn, yet one of the hardest. A leader tries and moves on from situations as gracefully as they can while also maintaining self respect. People Pleasing may seem like the “best” option, but how does that affect you? Not everyone will be happy, but you have to do what is right.
Another lesson that was prevented this year, is seeking the good, not the bad. Not every single thing that goes on in your life, has to be bad. Difficult situations can be a sign of redirection. “Rejection is Protection.” A true leader tries and strips the good from every situation and does their best to leave harmful behavior and/or thoughts behind. You have to roll with the punches to move on, and better yourself and your own work.
No one is perfect. No one will be the “best” leader, for there is not only one definition of it. A leader is someone who puts in their effort and thinks about others before themselves. They look out for others and try to better the environment we live in together.

Change - Section 22
The Junior class has had a very… interesting year, to say the least. Many different opportunities have struck us for a lot of growth and change in the way we lead and communicate with each other. Sometimes you have to leave a situation to move on, and that's a story only necessary between yourself. I don't agree with the way things were handled, but my opinions are not needed and sharing them will not make anything better. People will do what is best for them, and I trust those and respect those for putting their well being first.
Change is not always a bad thing, and that is something that I have learned this year. Allow the universe or God to guide you in a path that is right for you. Our life is not meant to be easy, and in fact, many “bad” things will happen along the way, but you have to not give those situations power to control you. Dillian Saltmans shared a very wise concept during his Elder Project in class, and it went along the lines of, “You are life, and by giving your energy into negative situations or experiences, let them be a bad situation.” Yes, we are human and this is not an easy thing to do, but it is a great thing to live by. I have been through a lot this year, and by hearing this has truly opened my eyes to what life is. I make life, and I control how I deal with situations.
Issues that I have seen throughout the leadership program this year is the lack of trust. We don’t trust clothes to finish/ complete their work, or even do it well. We don’t trust others to respect our work and be nice to each other. Especially in the beginning of the year, different classes had targets on their backs, that made people think that they would criticize them about whatever. Criticism is necessary to improve, yet there is a time and place for when it is needed. I believe that this issue of trusting others has been resolved over time, yet to me seems pretty unnecessary. People should be held accountable to their responsibilities, but everyone is entitled to respect and grace.
Leadership is a very beneficial program, yet has its ups and down just like anything else in life. Nothing is perfect and you make leadership what it is. I am truly grateful for the experiences that it has given me and I wouldn't want to go through this crazy program with any other classmates.

The Ideal Leader - Section 23
The students at Ripon High are blessed enough to have a well committed and dedicated program like ASB Leadership. Here, we set the standard high for those entering the program and expect much for those who are willing to apply. A leader is fearless; someone is not afraid to take charge and speak up for what they believe in. I believe that to successfully be a part of this program, you need to use your voice. Voice the concerns and problems you see at this school, and be open to criticism. Being able to receive feedback is one of the most crucial things a leader will need to learn to be successful in the future. At the end of the day, none of this is personal and this program is only here to make YOU a better leader. With that being said, a strong leader takes advantage of the opportunities that are given to them at hand. Leadership not only involves the fun, exciting parts like homecoming and dress up days, they also involve paperwork and teadiest assignments. Knowing how to fill out a purchase order and a facilities request will help ease the stresses of planning events. Turning in your work on time, managing your time well, and working productively will help you not only be liked in the class, but will make this class seem smoothless.
Leadership is more than how many people you know or how much spirit you spread around campus; it also is about the standard you hold yourself at. This is not an easy class. This is a commitment that involves you to be ready at all times. Knowing this you have to be willing to face defeat and failure sometimes and show it who's boss. Quitting and giving up may seem like the easy route sometimes, but a real leader is someone who pushes through. Caring about the work you put out and at least trying to give everyone the best experience is also very important. Our whole goal here in the program is to better the experience of highschool for everyone; so when you don’t care about your work, why should anyone else? Coming into this class with a ready to go mindset is key to success and can only be found within yourself.
